Marvel Finally Gets Product Placement Right With Hyundai Ioniq 5

Dec. 17, 2021 12:07 PM ET by Gerhard Horn Video / 2 Comments Product placement at its best. If you've seen any of Marvel's many MCU films, you'll know that they strike a deal with an automotive manufacturer for every single movie. Tony Stark had a thing for Audis, Black Widow drove a Chevrolet Corvette, and Black Panther was a Lexus guy. Unless you've been hiding in a bunker for the last year, you'll know that the new Spider-Man movie dropped this week. We watched it on opening day, and it was yet another cinematic masterpiece from the house of the mouse. But you would not know that Hyundai was the vehicle partner for this movie from watching it. We only know that as Hyundai is flaunting it all over YouTube, but we can't remember seeing the car at all. Well played, Hyundai. The previous films certainly weren't as subtle.
UPDATE: The Ioniq 5 does indeed make an appearance, driven by Happy Hogan during a gut-wrenching scene. Hyundai/Facebook HyundaiUSA/YouTube HyundaiUSA/YouTube Hyundai recently posted a behind-the-scenes video of Tom Holland and Jacob Batalon in the new Ioniq 5. This must have been a cut scene because it is irrelevant to the film. The only person we remember driving is Happy Hogan, and he used to be a Rolls Royce guy. Perhaps he decided to go green. Good for him. Actually, we're just poking fun at Hyundai. The behind-the-scenes footage is from Hyundai's short film produced with the two famous actors. There are a lot of surprises in the movie, and Hyundai likely didn't want to hazard any potential spoilers. We respect that and thank Hyundai for its dedication. It references a gag used in the first Tom Holland Spider-Man movie, Homecoming. In short, Spider-Man's powers are useless when there aren't any tall buildings around, so what's a superhero to do when he's stuck in a small town in a flat state like Illinois? Hyundai has the answer. Your best friend drives out to get you in the all-electric Hyundai Ioniq 5. According to the EPA, it has a driving range of 303 miles, so you can't be that far from home. Still impressive for an EV, however. The Ioniq is the latest EV on the US market and one of the cheapest available. With the Federal Tax Incentive deducted, it retails for just $32,200.
