New York Just Spent A Fortune On Ford Mustang Mach-E Cop Cars

The New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) recently announced that it will be placing an order for 184 Ford Mustang Mach-Es. It seems New York decided against ordering a fleet of Tesla Model 3s, opting instead for the Ford. The Mach-E cop car was first spotted on the streets of Michigan earlier this year. It looks pretty cool with the police livery. This follows a global trend in police moving over to EVs. NYC's brand-new fleet of electric Mustangs will be used by the New York Police Department (NYPD), the New York City Sheriff's Office, the Department of Correction, the Department of Parks and Recreation, the Department of Environmental Protection, NYC Emergency Management, DCAS Police, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The incoming Mach-E fleet will replace gas-powered vehicles in the city's fleet, but the shipment will only arrive on June 30, 2022. It's gratifying that we are able to build an even greener City fleet while working towards a more equitable city." This purchase sets the record for law enforcement's largest all-electric plug-in purchase. "Law enforcement vehicles are the largest and most visible part of our City's fleet," said DCAS Deputy Commissioner and NYC Chief Fleet Officer Keith Kerman. "This order of all-electric Mach-Es will enable our law enforcement agencies to put electric models to the full test and work out maintenance, lights, and sirens, charging, and other operational issues. It is a critical step towards our goal of a fully electric fleet." NYC did not go for the entry-level Select, but rather the fierce GT. The latter has a dual-motor setup connected to the extended range battery. The total power output is 480 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque. Ford says it will get to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds, so if you're planning criminal activity in NYC, you better bring something faster to the party. The range, according to the EPA, is 270 miles. As for charging, DCAS has already installed 29 fast chargers for the NYPD and 103 fast chargers available to the entire city. An additional 275 chargers will be erected in 2022. The contract, worth $11.5 million for this initial order, was registered by a minority and/or women-owned business enterprise (MWBE) vendor. "We are proudly reaffirming our commitment to minority and women-owned businesses as we take yet another step closer to transforming the City of New York's vehicle fleet," said Mersida Ibric, Deputy Commissioner for Procurement at the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services. "We are extremely pleased that an MWBE vendor will be supplying the crossover vehicles." This investment is part of a larger $420 million deal to electrify the public vehicle fleet. It also included the purchase of 1,250 electric vehicles in 2022 and the installation of 1,776 fast chargers by 2030. The city is also investing in 180 solar carports and portable chargers that can be moved around to support flexible and emergency charging.
