Ford Delays Explorer And Aviator EVs Because Of The Mustang Mach-E

Dec. 12, 2021 11:10 AM ET by Jay Traugott Electric Vehicles / 3 Comments This is definitely the right call. The Ford Mustang Mach-E has been a huge success since the Blue Oval began accepting reservations back in late 2019. It was a bold decision to name and style its first-ever from the ground-up electric vehicle after its most iconic model, the Mustang. That bet has paid off and continues to do so. In fact, two more upcoming EVs are seeing their launches delayed in order to boost Mach-E supplies. Automotive News has confirmed from an internal Ford memo that the production start dates of the fully electric Explorer and Lincoln Aviator SUVs are being delayed about 18 months. Originally, the plan was to get them both crossing the assembly line in mid-2023. CarBuzz CarBuzz CarBuzz That won't happen until late 2024. In addition, neither vehicle will be built at the company's Cuautitlan, Mexico factory where the Mach-E is built. That floor space is needed for more Mach-Es. The memo further informed suppliers Ford has to decide which factory will be assigned Explorer and Aviator EV production. As of this writing, Ford has not released an official statement to the media. Lisa Drake, chief operating officer of Ford North America, did confirm plans to make Cuautitlan a Mach-E only facility. Ford wants to increase production volume to 200,000 units annually by 2023. Ford Ford Ford "We had previously contemplated building an additional electric vehicle down there in Cuautitlan but our first priority right now is to scale production of the Mach-E given that demand," Drake said. "Our production system is very flexible by design, and we'll utilize multiple North American plants as we build out our future North American lineup." Major preparation is needed to make that happen. For example, Ford will be working with suppliers to boost supplies of critical Mach-E components like battery cells and electric drive systems. There's a second Mach-E plant in China but it's dedicated solely to that market. This year, Ford is on track to sell about 60,000 Mach-Es globally.
