Volvo' s New Tesla Fighter Is Already Sold Out

Nov. 28, 2021 3:49 PM ET by Jay Traugott Electric Vehicles / 16 Comments It's not a bad problem to have. If you're in the market for a new Volvo C40 Recharge and haven't finalized a deal, then you're out of luck, at least for 2021. The Chinese-owned Swedish luxury brand's first all-electric-only model is officially sold out for what's left of the current model year, according to Automotive News Europe. Orders are now being filled into February 2022 but it seems the Belgian factory the C40 calls home can't keep up with current demand. It's not a terrible situation to be in but Volvo, quite understandably, wants to increase the production rate in order to avoid losing sales to rivals, such as the Tesla Model 3 and Mercedes-Benz EQA. Volvo will reportedly manage to build 6,000 to 7,000 examples by the end of the year. Company officials declined to comment regarding production capacity for 2022. Not only does it manufacture the C40 but also all three variants of the popular XC40, including the XC40 Recharge EV. Volvo wants the Belgian factory's output to consist of at least 60 percent EV by sometime next year. This year alone it'll complete the assembly of 200,000 vehicles. Although the C40 and XC40 Recharge share a platform and many other essential components, the former, which began production in October, appeals to a slightly different buyer. It also has a higher starting price, beginning at $58,750 before the federal tax credit and other state-by-state incentives. The C40 comes standard with a panoramic roof and other goodies like LED headlights with new pixel technology that helps to reduce glare for oncoming traffic. Some interior materials consist of recycled plastic bottles. Like Teslas, the C40 can be purchased entirely online without having to set foot in a dealer showroom. Home delivery is also possible. The C40 shares the XC40 Recharge's 78 kWh battery pack that's good for 402 horsepower and 487 lb-ft of torque. The EPA estimates a 225-mile range on a single charge, slightly besting the XC40 Recharge's 208 miles. As far as we know, the XC40 Recharge remains available but it's the pricier and sleeker body style that's winning over customers. Volvo Volvo Volvo Source Credits: Automotive News Europe
