Lexus RX TRD Body Kit Doesn' t Look Completely Terrible
Sep. 05, 2019 5:15 AM ET by Jay Traugott / 2 Comments It could have been worse. Much worse. The Lexus RX crossover is not exactly the definition of exciting. It is, however, an automotive history trailblazer. Yes, really. It was, more or less, the crossover that kicked off this whole crossover craze in the first place following its 1998 debut. Always sharing a platform with the Camry sedan, Toyota's luxury division had a brilliant and creative idea that has since changed the automotive market landscape. Traditional sedan sales are dropping across the board because of crossover popularity. It was the Lexus RX that kicked this all into gear, for better or worse. Over the years, the RX has been redesigned several times and today it definitely looks better than ever, assuming you like the luxury brand's current design language, spindle grille and all. To further enhance those looks, Toyota Racing Development (TRD) has created a body kit for the 2020 Lexus RX F Sport, but there's a catch – it's sold only in Japan. TRD/Lexus TRD/Lexus TRD/Lexus That's kind of a shame because it really doesn't look half bad. The kit consists of a front spoiler, side skirts, fender covers, and a rear diffuser. Total cost: 650,000 yen, or about $6,110. A sport muffler costs an additional 285,000 yen, or $2,680. And there's more. Japanese buyers can also tack on 21-inch forged aluminum wheels priced at $1,500 each, or even a set of 22-inchers priced at $1,530 each. Lastly, a front and rear performance damper set can be had for another $940. Could Lexus decide to offer this TRD kit, or something similar, to US customers? Probably not, simply because the typical North American RX buyer is not so much into body kits. TRD/Lexus TRD/Lexus TRD/Lexus The 2020 Lexus RX 350 F Sport sold in the US is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 with 295 horsepower and 268 lb-ft of torque. 0-60 mph happens in 7.9 seconds, so a performance crossover it is definitely not. And that's just fine because that was never its goal. Apparently, Japanese RX buyers appreciate a bit more styling attitude. TRD/Lexus TRD/Lexus TRD/Lexus Join The Discussion
