Toyota Corolla and Matrix Drivers Need To Pay Attention

Sep. 01, 2019 3:00 PM ET by Ian Wright Recall / 1 Comment Toyota is conducting a recall on its recall. This isn't the first automotive recall on a recall, but we're in danger here of reaching the point where there's a recall on the recall of a recall when it comes to airbags. With everyone stepping away from Takata safety devices, we were hoping we would avoid some sort of airbag inception scenario, but it appears the danger hasn't passed. This one is for drivers of what Toyota notes as "... Certain 2003-2008 Model Year Corolla and 2005-2008 Model Year Matrix vehicles in the United States. Toyota Toyota Toyota In total, there are approximately 135,000 vehicles in the US involved in this, so far, voluntary recall. The original recall was, of course, due to Takata airbags which were developing a nasty habit of going off and launching hot metal shards at people's faces. In total, at least 24 deaths were blamed on the defective airbags. The replacement for the Takata airbags was, according to Toyota, from a different company and the automaker hasn't commented on whether it has identified any injuries or deaths related to the replacement airbags. Toyota Toyota Toyota Toyota dealers will be replacing the front passenger airbag assembly in effected vehicles for a new one at no cost to its customers. "If one of these airbags deploys, there is a possibility that it could be damaged," Toyota said in a statement, and that: "Such damage could cause the airbag to not properly inflate, and this could increase the risk of occupant injury in the event of a crash." Toyota says that owners of all involved vehicles will be notified by the end of October via first class mail. Corolla and Matrix owners that don't want to wait can visit Toyota's or the NTHSA's recall pages and enter their information to check if their vehicle is involved in the recall. Toyota Toyota
