Badass Chevy Truck Restomod Defies One Major Element

Aug. 26, 2019 6:35 PM ET by Jay Traugott Trucks / 22 Comments But we love it nonetheless. You could go out and buy the latest 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD and drive home perfectly happy. It's a great truck and all, but we think we've found something even more enticing. Meet Rtech Fabrication's Chevy Ponderosa, a restomod of a 1966 Chevy Crew Cab 4x4 pickup truck that more than looks the part of a serious off-roader. Although it has an old school body based on the 1972 C30 chassis, the Ponderosa was essentially built from the ground up, but it still sports plenty of retro goodness. Just look at that stunning two-tone body with a matching 1966 Chevy grille. Also included are original factory bumpers. For some more modern tech, there are power deployable running boards and a 12,000 lbs warn winch. Despite this, there is a Bluetooth compatible RetroSound Hermosa head unit and a custom-built center console, and even a "period-correct nav system," aka a compass. Now, here's where some Chevy truck fans might have a problem. Under the hood lies a 5.9-liter Cummins diesel V8 sourced from a 1996 Ram. It's not entirely stock, however. It has been fully overhauled with a new camshaft, BD Diesel manifold, upgraded turbocharger, and new injectors. Total output is about 550 horsepower and 1,300 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed automatic transmission distributes power to a heavy-duty NP205 transfer case. The company also added custom driveshafts and Dana 60 / 70 axles. Other notable features include Bilstein remote-reservoir shocks, a 60-gallon fuel tank, upgraded steering system, and 20-inch wheels wrapped in 37-inch Nitto Trail Grapplers tires. Pricing? Well, she ain't cheap with a starting price of $150,000. Put it like this: none of your truck buddies will have one.
