This New Volkswagen Golf Will Be Efficient AND Fast

The hype is starting to build for the next-generation Volkswagen Golf, which has already been spied testing in GTI guise wearing heavy camouflage. It will likely be some time before the new GTI arrives in the US after it is revealed in Europe and VW has already said the base Golf will not be offered in the US market. This means we will also miss out on variants like the Golf Sportwagen and Alltrack but there is another Golf variant that could potentially make it to the US this time around. Our spy photographer recently spotted the new Golf GTE plug-in hybrid out testing. The GTE is essentially a hybrid version of the GTI and even though it has been incredibly popular in Europe, VW has never offered it in the US. It is difficult to tell how the GTE will differ from other Golf models due to the camo but we can peek inside to see VW's Digital Cockpit display, which was not available on the last-generation model. CarBuzz CarBuzz CarBuzz CarBuzz The last Golf GTE used a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 148 horsepower mated to a 101 hp electric motor with total output rated at 201 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. This eighth-generation car is still expected to use a 1.4-liter engine, though this time it will be the same unit found in the European Passat GTE. Power from the engine will increase to 156 hp while the electric motor will also be more potent with 115 hp. In total, the output will increase from 201 hp to 218 hp, which is close to the current Golf GTI. CarBuzz CarBuzz CarBuzz CarBuzz Since this is a plug-in hybrid, it will also have a decent all-electric driving range. The last GTE could go around 31 miles on a full charge at speeds of up to 81 mph and in hybrid mode, could hit 60 mph in 7.6 seconds and drive up to 584 miles. We are hoping the Golf GTE will come to the US for the first time but even if it doesn't, the Golf GTI is rumored to receive a hybrid system of its own in the form of a 48-volt system.
