Volkswagen' s Latest Hot Coupe Comes From A Surprising Place

Sep. 03, 2019 2:35 PM ET by Jared Rosenholtz Teaser / Comments It will be sold in the "international market," but does this include the US? Volkswagen has become a lot more generous with offering its cool models in the US market but there are still many instances where the German automaker's best products remain forbidden fruit. The company's new model called the T-Roc R, for example, is an awesome 300-horsepower crossover that won't be sold in the United States. Volkswagen will also offer a convertible version called the T-Roc Cabriolet that likewise, will be for Europe only. There is no shortage of other VW models we could reference, including a new model from the company's Brazilian division, Volkswagen do Brasil, called the "New Urban Coupé." Production is slated for 2020 at VW's Anchieta plant in Brazil with a European version arriving in 2021. Sadly, this looks like another cool VW product we won't see in the US. Volkswagen Volkswagen Volkswagen This new model will dramatically increase Volkswagen do Brasil's international relevance as the VW Group invests seven billion BRL (around $1.68 billion) in the development of new products, digitalization, and technological innovations. "The internationalization of Volkswagen began 60 years ago with the construction of the plant in Anchieta, Brazil. South America has been an important market for Volkswagen ever since. We are strengthening our regionalization strategy with these investments," Ralf Brandstätter, Chief Operating Officer of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand said. "For the first time in our history, we will be offering our very own vehicle concept on the international market, and sharing design, technology, and know-how from Brazil with the world," Pablo Di Si, President and CEO of Volkswagen Latin America added.
Volkswagen Volkswagen Volkswagen The New Urban Coupe will be based on VW's MQB architecture and will likely be powered (at least in the Brazillian market) by either a 1.6-liter four-cylinder with 108 horsepower or a 1.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 114 hp. A production version could go by the name T-Sport, which would follow the recent naming scheme of the company's other small crossovers. VW says this new model will be sold in international markets but it seems unlikely the US will be included among them. Kolsea Kolsea
