BMW' s Latest i8 And i3 Updates Are Classy As Hell

Sep. 02, 2019 11:50 AM ET by Noah Joseph / 1 Comment Limited-edition i3s and i8 get dark paint, copper trim, and more. BMW is planning to roll out a whole raft of new electrified vehicles in the coming years – 25 in all by 2023, to be specific. But before any of those arrive, it's introducing special editions of its two existing ones, upgraded with new trim to make them stand out even more than their eye-catching designs already do. Though revealed together, with similar aesthetic approaches, the two special editions bear different names. Both the BMW i3s Edition RoadStyle and i8 Ultimate Sophisto Edition wear special copper-tone accents to highlight their dark paint-jobs, and will be strictly limited in production. BMW BMW BMW The i3s Edition RoadStyle wears a special coat of Fluid Black, with the kidney grilles, front-bumper air deflectors, and side skirts accented in what BMW calls E-Copper. The RoadStyle rolls on blacked-out 20-inch alloys, with an interior swathed in brown leather with dark oak trim. Based as it is on the enhanced i3s model, the special edition boasts 181 horsepower's worth of electric power, backed by a 42.2-kWh battery pack to give it 153 miles of electric range and a 0-60 mph time quoted at 6.8 seconds. No word here on the availability of the range-extender typically offered in the i3, so we could be looking at a purely electric affair. BMW BMW BMW BMW BMW The limited-edition i3s is joined as well by the Ultimate Sophisto edition of the i8, which also wears 20-inch alloys and E-Copper accents, this time contrasting with special Sophisto Grey paint. Along with the wheels, grilles, and side skirts, the interior is also done up in copper, while the brake calipers have been blacked out with a glossy finish and the badges detailed in blue. Buyers will be able to choose between coupe and convertible body styles, but only 200 examples will be offered worldwide altogether, along with 900 units of the special i3s. Production is slated to begin later this year, with pricing information to follow. BMW BMW BMW BMW BMW BMW
