There' s A New Ford F-150 V8 Engine Update

Earlier this week we learned Ford was considering the idea of replacing the naturally aspirated 5.0-liter Coyote V8 in the hot-selling F-150 pickup truck. Thing is, that V8 hasn't been such a hot seller as of late. Same issue affects the Mustang GT. Therefore, Ford was reportedly considering dropping this V8 in the F-150 and, eventually, replacing it with a new and more fuel-efficient 4.8-liter V8 following a $447 million investment to its engine plant in Windsor, Ontario. Again, this was all a rumor and nothing official was announced. Today, however, Ford Authority has learned that only part of this rumor is true. Supposedly. Here's what we know: the F-150 will not be getting that new 4.8-liter V8 but will, in fact, keep the 5.0 V8 instead. But what about that huge plant investment? Ford Ford Ford It's still happening but the money won't be used for retooling the facility for that engine, but rather to update the existing 5.0 Coyote with fuel injection. There will be some retooling necessary, but this is intended for the new 7.3-liter Godzilla V8 for the new F-Series Super Duty. So, for those who love the Coyote V8, well, you're in luck. It's not going anywhere and only getting better with improved efficiency. We've reached out to Ford seeking further comment. Assuming this is all true and it does come across as a very realistic plan, when will this improved V8 debut? More than likely for the 2021 model year, just in time for the next-generation F-150. Ford Ford Ford It's also worth noting that the 5.0 V8 is not and likely won't continue to be the most powerful engine available in the F-150. That honor currently belongs to the turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 with 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. The Coyote V8 in the F-150 offers 395 hp and 400 lb-ft. We don't expect a significant power boost for 2021 since improved fuel efficiency is the name of the game here. Ford Ford Ford Ford
