Audi Teases Sweet-Looking Electric Off-Roader

Aug. 24, 2019 1:05 PM ET by Jared Rosenholtz Concept / 10 Comments Here's when you can see it. The 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show opens its doors next month, which is why automakers have begun teasing their latest concepts that will be on display. Hyundai showed a teaser of its all-electric concept and now it's Audi's turn to wow us with a battery-powered concept of its own. It's called the Audi AI:TRAIL Quattro concept, and it previews what a future electric off-roader from Audi could look like. The company released a pretty revealing teaser image showing the shadowy side of the concept, giving us a pretty clear picture of how it will look. "With this premiere, the brand with the four rings is completing a quartet of visionary automobiles, which started in 2017," Audi said. The German automaker will also have the Aicon autonomous sedan concept from 2017 on display at its stand.
AUDI AG AUDI AG The AI:TRAIL looks similar to the AI:ME concept, which was revealed at this year's Shanghai Auto Show as a futuristic hatchback concept. Audi hasn't given any stats on its new concept but we wouldn't be surprised if the predicted performance figures match the 170 horsepower quoted for the AI:ME. The AI:Trail looks larger than the AI:ME thanks to chunky tires and with almost no front and rear overhangs, the design should be conducive to off-roading. Since the concept has Quattro in its name, we expect it to feature some form of all-wheel-drive system, perhaps one electric motor driving each axle or even one electric motor per wheel. AUDI AG AUDI AG AUDI AG But no matter what Audi says lives underneath the futuristic body, we don't think the AI:Trail will ever reach production. Just look at it, there's no way that shape and huge amounts of glass will be put on a production car. If anything, the AI:Trail could likely preview some future technology from Audi but it certainly doesn't hint at a new model that we will see anytime soon. AUDI AG AUDI AG AUDI AG
