Driving with the top down is about having fun and enjoying the sights and smells of the world as you pass by, even if it is at the kind of speeds that can get you a free ride in a police car and an overnight stay in a small room at the state or county's expense. There are also practical reasons to drive around with the roof off. Driving and topping off your suntan is excellent time management, tall drivers get all the headroom they could ever need, you can look cool by jumping in over the doors, and if you're lazy and don't put the roof up then you can't lock the keys in your car. You can also talk to the cop giving you a ticket without winding down the window, so there's that to consider with this list of seriously fast convertibles.

Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante

We wonder why anyone would by a DBS Superleggera with a roof. The convertible version clearly has the ultimate feature to allow you to listen to the 715 horsepower V12 soundtrack that's also supplied with every DBS Superleggera. If you wanted to thrash your convertible around a track, there are better cars to follow on this list. But, for a more sophisticated coast-to-coast run then it's just under $350,000 well spent for a DBS Superleggera Volante. It's also Aston Martin's fastest soft-top to date with a 211 mph top speed. Audi R8 Spyder V10 Plus

On the more attainable side when talking about price tags, Audi's R8 has to make the list. It's no slouch with a top speed of 204mph but comes with a price tag of just $208,100. We say just, but a smart shopper can find a used one for anywhere down to half that price. Lamborghini Aventador SV Roadster

If the sophistication of an Aston Martin just seems snobbish to you and a German suit-clad chassis is too boring, then you just might in the demographic suited for a Lamborghini Aventador SV Roadster. The top speed of 217 mph comes from an engine as wild as the styling suggests, and it's housed in a track focussed all-Italian chassis. Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Convertible

When it comes to bang for the buck, everyone's favorite supercar adversary is the Corvette. Until Chevy announces a convertible ZR1 version of the imminent mid-engined Corvette, then around $125,000 gets you into a front-engined 211mph monster and the wind in your hair. Grab one while you can though, they won't be around forever. GM

Bentley Continental GT Convertible

For the last word in style and comfort at over 200 mph, look no further than a Bentley. The Continental Supersports Convertible will pop 207 mph if you really want, despite its 5401 lbs of curb weight. Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet

If you want 4 seats, a fold-away roof, and to be able to romp past 200 mph then the Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet gives a very different flavor than the Bentley Continental GT Convertible. It's that S that gets you the extra horsepower that's getting it to 205 mph over the standard Turbo's 198 mph. Porsche Porsche

Pagani Huayra Roadster BC

Pagani has only just pulled the covers off of the BC version and only plans to make 40 of them, so if you have a $3.5 million dollars to throw down, you'll need to get in quick. Of course, only 100 of the Huayra Roadster Roadster were supposed to be made after it was announced in 2017 so maybe you don't need to actually run screaming to Pagani with your wallet out. If you want to go the non-traditional route for a topless supercar, there's always the Noble M600 Speedster and its jaw-dropping top speed of 225 mph. That ridiculous turn of speed comes from a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 built by Judd, a race engine builder famous for its Formula 1 engines. Performance-wise, it'll go head to head with your 'average' Ferrari and Lamborghini, and famously out dragged a Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera and an Audi R8 in a half-mile race on Top gear. If you can find and afford one, then you can get yourself a 254 mph car that you can also drive with the top off. Not that we would recommend trying to hit the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse's top speed without the roof, but when you pull in to visit the golf club on your way to the yacht club there's no reason not to be tanning the bald spot. Hennessey Venom GT Spyder

Only 6 of the Spyder versions of the Venom GT were built, and we have Steven Tyler of Aerosmith to thank for that. He approached Hennessey wanting an open-top roofed version of the twin-turbo Corvette V8-powered 4-wheeled missiles. On the US Navy's runway at Lemoore, California, the Venom GT Spyder laid down a top speed of 265.6 mph. At the end of this list, we need to talk about the ultimate in top-down braggadocio. Whatever you would end up paying now will get you a roadster capable of a frightening 277.87mph. The 5.0-liter twin-turbo V8 makes a staggering 1,144 horsepower and, if you need to go round corners really, really, fast, the aerodynamics generate 1,067 lbs of downforce at 155mph.
