The Mercedes-AMG One Sounds Incredible

Sep. 16, 2019 10:40 AM ET by Martin Bigg Supercars / 9 Comments Your ears are in for a treat. The Mercedes-AMG One is one of the most anticipated new hypercars, so it's surprising that we still haven't seen any prototypes on the move – until now. AMG owners were recently invited to a special event in Baden-Baden, Germany, to get a sneak peek at the upcoming GT R Black Series and the One hypercar. Luckily, someone filmed the camouflaged AMG One tearing up a racetrack for our viewing pleasure.
The clip is short but sweet and the video quality leaves a lot to be desired, but we get to hear the AMG One F1-sourced powertrain scream for the first time. Close your eyes, and you'd be forgiven for thinking you were listening to a modern Formula One racecar. That makes sense since the AMG One is being pitched as a racecar for the road. Mercedes-AMG Mercedes-AMG https://www.instagram.com/p/B2RVrhSFcvU/ That ear-splitting exhaust note is the sound of the AMG One's 1.6-liter V6 Formula 1 engine paired with four electric motors, giving the hypercar a combined 1,200 horsepower, and it sounds unlike anything else in the hypercar segment. It's worth noting that the AMG One shown in the video is clearly still a prototype, so the final production model could sound very different. Originally, deliveries for the AMG One were slated to start either later this year or early next year, but they have now been delayed until 2021. Crucially, this means the AMG One will now launch after its main rival, the Aston Martin Valkyrie. Unsurprisingly, making a racecar for the road isn't easy, as AMG is facing a number of challenges. Mercedes-AMG Mercedes-AMG AMG is reportedly struggling to get the F1-sourced technology to meet the strict emissions standards enforced by the World Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure. There are other factors that need addressing too. You can't start an F1 engine until it's been warmed to a temperature of around 175 degrees F, for example. Let's hope AMG can find a solution, because the One has the potential to revolutionize the hypercar segment. Production will be limited to 275 units, each costing $2.7 million.
