Ford' s Mustang Crossover Might Look Better Than Expected

Sep. 02, 2019 11:20 AM ET by Noah Joseph / 14 Comments These renderings give us hope. Ford, it should come as no surprise, has been working on a new performance crossover inspired by the Mustang. And the notion has left at least some pony-car enthusiasts a little apprehensive. But looking at these latest renderings, we have some cause for hope.
Both come from the desktop studio of the prolific Kleber Silva. Though they still may leave a bit to be desired, they don't look half bad. And more to the point, they leave us with the notion that the Mustang-inspired crossover may not be such a bad thing after all. Kleber Silva/Behance Kleber Silva/Behance The white-striped blue renderings, which we like best, are apparently based on another new and sporty Ford crossover - the Puma, which the Blue Oval automaker recently revealed for the European market. The project initially known as the Mach E will assuredly be larger, but the swoopy design lends itself rather convincingly to the Mustang's design cues applied to the front and rear ends. Especially with those racing stripes. The red renderings meanwhile appear to be based on the Mercedes GLE Coupe - a decidedly more upscale model than either the Puma or its forthcoming big brother. But that only highlights the precedent which the new crossover will follow in its own way. Kleber Silva/Behance Kleber Silva/Behance The notion of a sports car inspiring a crossover isn't new territory, after all. Since Porsche launched the Cayenne, many other automakers known for their sports cars have come out with performance crossovers of their own – like Lamborghini and Maserati, with Aston Martin and Ferrari soon to follow. Of course Ford has made more than its fair share of crossovers too, and this one won't be anywhere near as high-end as those high-riding European exotics. It'll also be all-electric. But like each of those, it will trade on a legacy of sports cars. And if the crossover really is here to stay, we suppose that's not an entirely bad thing. Ford Ford Ford Ford Ford
