BMW 5 Series Gains A Cool Feature From The X6

Aug. 23, 2019 1:15 PM ET by Jared Rosenholtz / 6 Comments And it looks even better on a sedan. The 2020 BMW 5 Series sports some noticeable upgrades over the outgoing 2019 model. One of the biggest changes is a power upgrade for the M550i version, raising the output from 455 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque to 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque (the same as the M850i). A power increase is by far the most significant upgrade but a BMW services advisor from New Hampshire just posted another available feature on Bimmerpost that is sure to go under-the-radar. The advisor says local BMW dealerships will sell you a light-up grille option for the 2020 5 Series. BMW showed off the same grille on the 2020 X6 but now you can have the feature without an ugly SUV attached to it. BMW BMW BMW BMW officially calls the option the Chrome Iconic Glow Kidney Grilles and it even has its own parts number. Since this is a BMW-made component, it includes a four-year/50,000-mile warranty as if it was installed from the factory. If you fancy the look of the light-up grille, the option adds LED lights that are integrated into the radiator grille. Not only does the grille illuminate, but the lights also shine on the ground to act as a puddle light. You could find an aftermarket kit to achieve similar results but it's nice to have a BMW-backed warranty to go along with it. Mercedes-Benz has offered a similar feature with an illuminated three-pointed star but we think BMW's lights look more natural. BMW BMW If you are interested in ordering the lights for your new 2020 5 Series, BMW is selling them for $614 and it costs and an additional $39 for the button that turns them on, which is, oddly, sold separately. The lights are a dealer-installed option so they won't show up on the BMW online configurator but if you order the parts to be installed after the car is delivered, the warranty will be shortened to two years.
