Rejoice Chevrolet Cruze Will Live On

After a string of disappointing sales months, GM announced that it will soon end production of the Chevrolet Cruze sedan and hatchback. This discontinuation was part of a larger announcement that included other soon to be culled vehicles, such as the Chevrolet Volt and Cadillac CT6, and factory closures and layoffs. However, the Cruze is still a decent seller in other markets outside of North America, so why should GM kill it off entirely? The fact is it won't, according to GM Authority. More specifically, South America is very fond of the Cruze, where it has been experiencing a sales surge in every country since 2016. Take Brazil, for example. The Cruze has doubled its segment market share while in Argentina its sales have grown 4.5 times. Conveniently enough, the Cruze is also manufactured at GM's Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico and the Rosario plant in Argentina. Lordstown, Ohio is not the only plant that builds the Cruze, so considering its phenomenal South American success and local production, there's zero reason for GM to stop this. "Cruze has become a tank for our Chevrolet brand and we will continue investing in this product so that it remains at the forefront of technology, innovation, safety and total connectivity," said Carlos Zarlenga, President of General Motors Mercosur. GM has already announced that the 2019 mid-life refresh the Cruze will soon undergo will be unveiled early next year in South America. GM The 2019 Cruze is also set to become the first-ever Chevy to offer built-in 4G LTE connectivity. So far, GM's Argentina production plant has built over 110,000 units in both sedan and hatchback body styles. Even the turbocharged 1.4-liter inline-four engine is built at the same complex. This engine is also exported to other markets, such as Mexico and England, for other models. But there's still one more production facility that builds the Cruze outside of North America GM has remained mum about. The Shanghai-GM Norsom II plant builds both the Cruze sedan and hatch for the Chinese market, but the automaker has yet to make any announcement regarding its future. Chevrolet Chevrolet Chevrolet
