Can A Hypercar Really Be Worth $7 5 Million

Dec. 22, 2018 5:00 PM ET by Noah Joseph Auctions / 7 Comments That's how much this rare LaFerrari Aperta is estimated to fetch at auction We've become accustomed by now to the idea that hypercars can run cost over a million dollars. Several million, even. But $7.5 million? They've got to be kidding, right?
Only they're not. That's the middle of the estimate range that RM Sotheby's has placed on this rare and highly coveted Ferrari that's set to headline its upcoming sale in Scottsdale next month. And we won't be all that surprised to see it fall somewhere in that quoted $6.5-8.5 million range when the gavel drops on January 17 at the Arizona Biltmore. So what makes this Prancing Horse worth more than two Bugatti Chirons, you wonder? Well for starters it's a LaFerrari, which is already one of the most capable performance machines ever devised, anywhere in the world, at any price. With 950 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque on tap, it could run to 62 in 2.4 seconds, top out over 217 mph, and lap Fiorano in 1:19.7 – which, over three years later, remains the fastest time that any road-going Ferrari has ever lapped the test track. But this is no "ordinary" LaFerrari. This is an Aperta. The roadster version of Maranello's hybrid hypercar was only built in a very limited run of 210 examples, leaving them highly coveted among collectors. When Ferrari auctioned off the 210th and final example, it brought in nearly $10 million, setting a new record. By that standard, $7.5 million seems like a relative bargain – if it actually sells. Bonhams didn't when it had another of the same consigned with a similar estimate this past September. Mecum has one coming up next month as well, so it'll be interesting to see where bidding takes them at the start of the new year ahead.
