Hyundai Elantra Clocks Up One Million Miles In Just Five Years

Dec. 12, 2018 12:25 PM ET by Martin Bigg / 9 Comments This is how you advertise a car's reliability. Most modern cars can clock up 100,000 miles without breaking a sweat. With proper maintenance and careful driving, some cars will live on past 200,000 miles. But very few car owners can say they've clocked up over one million miles. This achievement isn't unheard of, but they tend to be achieved by classic cars that have been owned for decades. Amazingly, delivery driver Farah Haines managed to break the one-million-mile barrier in just five years driving her 2013 Hyundai Elantra sedan. Hyundai has documented her remarkable story on its YouTube channel, where it's revealed that the sedan achieved this with its original powertrain. Haines says she drives 24/7 and averages 200,000 miles a year for her job. "I figured I love to drive, so I might as well turn it into a career", she said. Haines drives so much that she customized her Elantra with a front-grille guard to protect it. Digital odometers in most cars tend to only have up to six figures, so nobody would be able to see that Haines had racked up one million miles in her Elantra. To rectify this, Hyundai replaced her old odometer and gave her "The Million Mile Emblem" only offered to Hyundai owners who have reached the seven-figure mark and a gold license plate to commemorate her achievement. After all, any automaker would want to advertise to the world that one of its vehicles has been driven one million miles – Hyundai couldn't have hoped for a better way to promote the Elantra's reliability.
