BMW Already Discussing A Model Above The X7

BMW's latest flagship SUV, the X7, is already fresh in our minds following its US debut at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show. Yet even before its reveal, we were hearing rumors of a model slotted above it called the X8. Sources from BMW Blog initially claimed the X8 was in its initial planning stages and would not simply be a coupe version of the X7 like other even-numbed BMW X models. Instead, the X8 is rumored to be an even more luxurious SUV with a bespoke interior and unparalleled comfort. X-Tomi Design BMW Blog's sources in Munich now say the X8, which will use the internal code G09, is close to being greenlit for production. At the LA Auto Show last week, Ralph Mahler, BMW's Head of US Product Planning & Strategy, told us "There's always room to grow," when referring to BMW's massive SUV lineup. Mahler ruled out building anything smaller than the X1, but did not object to an SUV above the X7. The details about the X8 are still minimal but it is expected to cost more than the X7 and act as the most expensive model in the BMW lineup. The X8 will likely be based on the same platform as the X7 but only offer seating for four people instead of the X7, which offers seating for up to seven. The X7 already reaches tremendous levels of opulence but removing the third row could open up even more room for luxurious features. Without a third row seat, the X8 could have reclining second-row seats with an adjustable footrest like the most high-dollar luxury sedans. Engines are expected to be similar to the X7, though we wouldn't object to the 610 horsepower 6.6-liter V12 from the M760Li making an appearance. We'll have to wait to see if this rumor turns out to be true but our talks with BMW certainly make it sound plausible.
