Volkswagen Beetle Final Edition Bids Farewell To An Icon

Nov. 29, 2018 10:15 AM ET by Martin Bigg Special Editions / 3 Comments Bye bye, Bug. It's the end of an era. After 70 years, the Volkswagen Beetle is finally finishing production, and there are no plans to revive it in the future. Love it or hate it, the Beetle is an icon of the automotive industry, and the longest-running and most-manufactured car of a single platform ever made. To bid farewell to the humble Bug, Volkswagen is launching two special edition models called the Final Edition SE and Final Edition SEL. Both models were announced back in September, and have now made their public debut at the 2018 LA Auto Show. Available as either a coupe or convertible, the Final Edition is inspired by the "Última Edición" of the VW Beetle, that launched in 2003, which was only available two exclusive colors: Beige (Safari Uni) and Light Blue (Stonewashed Blue) exclusive colors. In addition to these colors, the Final Edition models are also available in Pure White, Deep Black Pearl Effect and Platinum Grey. The fabric roof of the Cabriolet is designed in a classy brown color. Unique exterior touches include chrome treatments, body-color side mirrors, heated washer nozzles, and a sunroof. Final Edition SEL models are equipped with Bi-Xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, and fog lights. The "Turbo" badge has also been replaced with "Beetle" lettering on the tailgate. SE models ride on 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with a 15-spoke design, while SEL models are fitted with 18-inch white aluminum-alloy wheels. Volkswagen Interior luxuries include keyless entry, a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, stainless steel pedal caps, automatic climate control, and three-color ambient lighting. SE models feature cloth seats with leatherette, while SEL models come with diamond-stiched leather. Both models are powered by a 2.0-liter engine paired that delivers 174 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. In the US, the Beetle Final Edition coupe starts at $23,045 and the Beetle Cabriolet Final Edition starts at $27,295.
