Lexus LC Convertible Concept Is Simply Stunning In The Metal

Jan. 15, 2019 3:20 PM ET by John Tallodi Concept / 3 Comments Pictures just don't do this car justice. The Lexus LC500 Coupe has been around for just over two years now, yet its fresh styling and swoopy lines haven't aged a day. Few modern GTs look half as good, that is except for the LC convertible concept that Lexus has been teasing us with over the past few months. Rumors of a drop top Lexus have been circulating for a while now and the images we have seen show that the futuristic coupe lends itself extremely well to a convertible body style. Having now seen the real thing at its unveiling at the Detroit Auto Show we can confirm that it looks miles better in the metal. CarBuzz CarBuzz CarBuzz CarBuzz Whereas some convertibles look as though they were an afterthought hastily cobbled together once the hardtop variants have been completed, the LC convertible concept looks as though it were designed as a drop top from the outset. Roof down it highlights the dynamic proportions of the vehicle, it looks long and low, no doubt because its total length is actually 8 inches more than that of a Corvette. The vestigial rear seats are still present though and from some angles, the convertible actually looks more like a two-seater than a 2+2 design. Still, the added interior space will be the perfect spot to place shopping bags. The interior, as with the coupe, is still a work of automotive art. Every panel and surface is covered in soft-touch plastics and high-quality fabrics, the design is refreshingly different from the usual fare found in the German competition too. CarBuzz CarBuzz CarBuzz CarBuzz The LC convertible may still carry the 'concept' tag but it is clear that Lexus is serious about putting this car on sale. "A production version of this concept would be exhilarating in many different ways. You would see its dynamic lines as you approach, hear its engine when you started it up and feel everything around you once on the road. It would engage the senses in a way that is unique and exciting every time you got behind the wheel," designer Tadao Mori said. With this being the thirtieth anniversary of the Lexus brand, they are sure to be introducing some special models to celebrate, so we wouldn't be surprised to see the LC 500 Convertible drop its concept tag along with its roof in the coming months.
