Back then, SUVs were off-road vehicles that sometimes performed double duty as a family vehicle. The majority were also not particularly luxurious. Fast-forward to 2018 and you have a variety of high-performance luxury SUVs to choose from, most of which carry a six-figure price tag. The Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, however, goes for around $86,000. Consider it something of a bargain compared to Range Rovers, the Bentley Bentayga and Lamborghini Urus. And just to further prove the massive changes the SUV has undergone over the course of nearly three decades, Jeep decided to hold a drag race in the UK, pitting the Trackhawk against a classic 1991 Audi Quattro and TVR Griffith. Jeep Jeep Remember, the Trackhawk has 707 hp, a 0-62 mph time of 3.7 seconds and an 11.48-second quarter-mile time. A supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V8 leads to figures like these. So did these two legendary sports cars from yesteryear do in this three-way competition? Well, they lost. The Trackhawk blasted to over 119 mph as it blazed across the finish line. Meanwhile, the Audi Quattro and TVR Griffith had respectable times of 18.48 seconds and 13.81 seconds, respectively. Not bad, especially for a pair of 27-year-old cars. To further compare, the TVR is powered by a 5.0-liter V8 with 340 hp and a 0-62 mph time of 4.1 seconds. The Audi features a 2.2-liter five-cylinder with 220 hp and a 6.2-second 0-62 mph sprint time. Jeep Jeep Jeep Like the Trackhawk, the Audi also features four-wheel drive, hence its name. But why is this three-way drag race being held in the UK? Because the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is just about to go on sale in that country with a starting price tag of £89,999. In the US it begins at $87,695. The most significant difference between the UK and US versions is that the former will feature right-hand drive. For potential UK buyers, pitting the Trackhawk against two well-known sports car icons famed for their speed could be one way to find an excuse to walk into a local Jeep showroom. They'll need to get there fast because only 20 examples will be available for model year 2019. Jeep Jeep
