Bugatti CEO Confirms Chiron Will Not Attempt Top Speed Record

Ever since it debuted back in 2016, we've been wondering when the Bugatti Chiron would attempt a top speed record run. After all, it has a Koenigsegg Agera RS to defeat, right? Nope. Motor Trend recently spoke with Bugatti CEO Stephan Winkelmann who confirmed there are no plans to take down that Swedish rival. How come? Because, according to Winkelmann, "to only talk top speed is not a priority for me." Remember, Winkelmann is Bugatti's recently appointed CEO but he's already made his mark with the likes of the Chiron Sport and Divo. His brand outlook is apparently a bit different than that of his predecessor, Wolfgang Durheimer. Bugatti Bugatti "When I read in the past about the car and what we communicated about it, we were missing a big part of what the car is all about," Winkelmann said. "You have cars of nice designs or others that are supersports cars that are fast and performing. It is much more important than showing one little slice of what this car is able to do." He also specifically pointed out that "261 mph is enough for me." And to be clear, Winkelmann does not view the Divo as a supersports version of the Chiron but rather it being "outside of the Chiron business." So that's that. No new top speed competition between Bugatti, Koenigsegg and Hennessey with the upcoming Venom F5. It'll be down to the latter two. Perhaps a third contender will appear later. Meanwhile, Winkelmann is focusing on expanding the Bugatti brand with a new model line. He further stressed that an SUV is not a given. "The press said it because I pushed for the Urus at Lamborghini… what I said is that we are looking into every segment, body style, and region. It has to be an approach good for the world and not one part. We have an idea where we want to go." At the same time, Winkelmann confirmed Chiron sales are progressing nicely. He expects to sell all 500 planned examples and if you place an order for one today you'll have to wait until the second half of 2021 for delivery. Bugatti Bugatti
