Mitsubishi Unveils Minivan We Could Live With

If you want to find some of the most unusual-looking new cars, go to Japan, home of the Kei car and lots of other funky designs like the Mitsubishi Delica D:5 minivan. It's for Japanese soccer moms and the redesigned 2019 model was revealed about a month ago. But Mitsubishi isn't wasting any time giving it an alternative look with this customized version, due to premiere at the 2019 Tokyo Auto Salon next month. Along with the somewhat beefier-looking Delica, a pair of "Street Sport" versions of the Outlander PHEV and Eclipse Cross will join it on stage. Mitsubishi The latter two, of course, are also sold in the US, and the chances of the Delica making its way stateside are absolutely, positively zero. But it's still kind of cool. We see it as sort of a mix between a minivan and an SUV box on wheels. Inside there are three rows of seats and it's powered by a 2.2-liter diesel engine with 170 hp and 290 lb-ft of torque. The Delica show car is further equipped with LED lights, heavy-duty guard rails, under-guard bars, red mud flaps, and a few other accessories that give it some offroad cred. As for the second two show cars, the Outlander PHEV Street Sport features a two-tone titanium grey metallic exterior, black stripe body graphics, and black mirrors and yellow accents. There's also a front spoiler and unique 20-inch alloy wheels wearing Yokohama tires. Mitsubishi The Eclipse Cross Street Sport also has some yellow accents, specifically on the front spoiler and side skirts, as well as 20-inch wheels with a five-spoke wheel design. There are also side and rear corner extension and a tailgate spoiler. No details were given regarding any interior enhancements. Chances are neither of these Street Sport variants will make their way to the US, but at least Mitsubishi is making an effort to give these two fairly mundane crossovers some panache.
