VW On A Mission To Build Cheap EV With 200-Mile Range

Consumer demand for crossovers is showing no signs of slowing down, and Volkswagen is happy to capitalize on that demand. While most of the automaker's upcoming electric I.D. cars that have been announced are passenger cars, we're also expecting a slew of electric SUVs to join the line-up as VW intends to launch 27 fully electric cars based on its new MEB platform by 2022. We already know the ID Crozz is coming, and now AutoExpress reports that the German automaker is considering developing an entry-level electric crossover to slot below it. It could also be cheaper than the production I.D. hatchback, which will be the first I.D. car entering production later this year. Volkswagen Volkswagen Details are scarce, but the publication claims the compact electric crossover will be around the same size as the T-Cross, which measures 13.1 feet long. If it gets the green light for production, the small SUV will ride on VW's MEB platform specifically designed for electric vehicles and could have a larger interior than the T-Roc thanks to the platform's clever packaging. The entry-level SUV will also be fitted with a 48kWh battery. While it's smaller than the Chevrolet Bolt's standard 60 kWh battery, the battery pack should still deliver a range of 205 miles based on the new WLTP standard, which is impressive for a small SUV. Volkswagen Volkswagen A mid-spec battery offered on other MEB-platform models will enable up to 280 miles on a single charge, while the longest-range version of the platform is rated at 341 miles. AutoExpress says it could go on sale early next decade with a price tag of less than £20,000 (around $25,000) and it will reportedly be built at Volkswagen's plant in Emden, Germany, if it gets the green light.
