Hardcore Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series Is Still Coming

Nov. 30, 2018 9:10 AM ET by Martin Bigg Sports Cars / 3 Comments Don't worry, the Mercedes-AMG GT R Pro isn't taking the Black Series' place. The Mercedes-AMG GT range got even more complicated this week. At the LA Auto Show, Mercedes-AMG debuted the all-new GT R Pro, the most track-focused and hardcore model yet. It's lighter, has stiffer suspension, and features more extreme aero using experienced gained from developing the GT4 race car. However, the introduction of the GT R Pro made us wonder if there will still be a new GT Black Series. Thankfully, AMG boss Tobias Moers has confirmed that a new GT Black Series is still coming. Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz "It's a track-enhanced version of the GT R, which was always part of the program. It's not the new Black Series, to be honest," he told Road and Track when talking about the new GT R Pro. When asked if this implied there will still be a new Black Series, he simply replied "yep." Unsurprisingly, details of the new Black Series are still being kept under wraps, but Moers confirmed AMG is currently testing prototypes and they'll likely hit the Nurburgring next summer. "You can easily recognize it," he teased. Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz The new Pro version retains the GT R's 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 GT R that delivers 577 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, so we're expecting the range-topping Black Series to increase that output to at least 600 hp. The same engine in the four-door GT 63 S produces 630 hp, so the new Black Series could have a similar output. Also expect additional aero and suspension tweaks. Based on previous Black Series models, it has the potential to be one of the greatest AMG cars of all time, so it has a lot to live up to. We'll find out if it delivers when it launches in 2020.
