by Gerhard Horn To keep the 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid competitive in the small but hotly contested minivan segment, the automaker gave it a thorough overhaul two years ago. Since crossovers and SUVs are all the rage at the moment, Chrysler added some rugged design elements to create the illusion of a more aggressive vehicle. In fact, out of all the minivans on offer in the USA, the Pacifica used to have the most SUV-like design until the new Kia Carnival arrived. A unique selling point, though, is that it's the only plug-in hybrid van for sale in the US, pairing two electric motors to the familiar 3.6-liter V6 engine for a total of 260 horsepower. The Toyota Sienna hybrid is its main rival, but it does not offer an electric-only driving range of 32 miles. Chrysler has also managed to keep the Pacifica hybrid relatively affordable while offering plug-in capabilities, decent gas mileage, and a great list of safety and comfort features. For 2022, the base Touring trim is no longer offered. All trims gain a new N95 cabin air-filtration system and a rear-seat reminder system that monitors the seat belts as well as doors being opened and closed becomes standard across the board. A Max Generation indicator is added to the instrument panel to indicate when battery regeneration is in progress. A big update to the Uconnect Theater Family Group rear-seat entertainment system - standard on the Pinnacle and optional on the rest - is the addition of Amazon Fire TV. This now allows for streaming music, TV shows, or movies or consuming downloaded content even when there is no internet connection. Rear-seat passengers also gain access to information such as the travel ETA and climate controls. There are changes to the exterior colors and Silver Mist is a new color for 2022.

The Pacifica hybrid van is one of a kind at the moment. Having a minivan with an all-electric range makes so much sense that we're pretty surprised nobody's thought about it before. The regular Pacifica is already arguably a class-leading car, offering loads of space for large families, with cargo space to spare. With the plug-in hybrid, you get the best of both worlds. The all-electric range is good enough for the school run during the week, and on the weekend, you can use the 3.6 naturally-aspirated V6 engine to get the most out of the towing capacity. Chrysler also includes a host of standard driver assistance features, making this ideal for family hauling. While some of its rivals may beat it in terms of outright passenger and cargo space, the Pacifica's high-end build quality and 30 mpg combined/82 MPGe fuel economy help it stand out in this (admittedly limited) crowd.
