A Record Number Of Jaguar XJ220 Supercars Will Gather At Silverstone

Mar. 30, 2017 6:00 AM ET by Martin Bigg / 2 Comments Over 50 examples of the iconic Jaguar XJ220 will gather at this year's Silverstone Classic show to celebrate its 25th anniversary. The Jaguar XJ220 is one of the most seminal supercars of all time. When launched in 1992, not only was it the fastest car Jaguar had ever made, it was the fastest production car in the world capable of reaching a top speed of 213 mph. Despite low sales, today it's regarded as one of the defining hypercars of the 1990s alongside the Ferrari F40, Porsche 959, and Bugatti EB110. This year it's the 25th anniversary of the XJ220, and to celebrate the organizers of the Silverstone Classic are planning something special. Jaguar The show's organizers are aiming to host a gathering of over 50 Jaguar XJ220s at the annual Silverstone Classic show this summer to break a new world record. Only 271 examples of the XJ220 were produced between 1992 and 1994, meaning that only a handful have ever been seen together. The dramatic design of the Jaguar XJ220 still looks stunning today, so this should be a spectacular sight. Renowned XJ220 specialist Don Law Racing is working closely with the show's organizers to make the special gathering possible. "We are inviting all XJ220 owners from right round the world to join us for what will be a really special celebration of an often overlooked supercar," said Law. "We will be bringing along some special models including the Martini car and the MIRA crash test car, and we are also hoping to have one of the factory Le Mans cars here. The largest public gathering of XJ220s in the UK to-date is 20 – our aim for this summer's Classic is to at least double that." Originally, the designers intended to fit the Jaguar XJ220 with a V12 and four-wheel-drive, but to meet emissions and performance targets the final production model arrived with a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 sending 542 hp to the rear transaxle through a five-speed manual. A racing version called the XJ220-C was also introduced in 1993 to compete in the GT class. Of course, while the Jaguar XJ220 was the fastest production car in the world at the time, it was soon surpassed the following year by the mighty McLaren F1. The three-day 2017 Silverstone Classic show kicks off on July 28th, with the Jaguar XJ220 event happening on July 29. This isn't the first time the Silverstone Classic show has hosted a record breaking gathering of supercars, either, as the show has become famous for its classic car parades. For the 25th anniversary of the iconic Ferrari F40, a record-breaking 60 examples gathered at the iconic racetrack, and similar parades have been hosted to celebrate anniversaries of the Ford Mustang, Porsche 911 and Jaguar E-Type.
