Watch The Nio EP9 Electric Supercar Set A Record Lap At The Nurburgring

Mar. 22, 2017 10:11 AM ET by Martin Bigg / 9 Comments We're waiting for conspiracy theorists to accuse Nio of faking the lap time. With all the spotlight on the Lamborghini Huracan Performante setting a new lap record for production cars at the Nurburgring, you'd be forgiven for forgetting that another lap record was recently set at the Green Hell that's just as impressive. We're talking of course about the incredible Nio EP9, an all-electric supercar which beat the record for EVs by quite some margin, setting a lap time of seven minutes and five seconds – that's 15 seconds faster than the previous record. And now you can see the astonishing lap in all its glory. An on-board video shows the EP9 being put through its paces around the Ring. According to the video, the lap time was set on October 14 2016, a week before the EP9 was first spotted at the Nurburgring. More recently, the EP9 also set a new lap record for electric cars at the Circuit of the Americas, as well as setting the fastest lap for a driverless car. Nio won't only be specializing in speedy electric supercars, however, having recently revealed the luxurious Eve concept as its second production car. The Chinese car company intends to introduce autonomous electric cars to the American market in 2020. The record times set by the EP9 aren't too surprising when you look at the specs, however. Powering the electric supercar are four electric motors, one at each wheel, which produce a combined output of 1,360 horsepower. According to Nio, it will reach the quarter mile in 10.1 seconds and hit a top speed of 194 mph. Sadly, it's probably only a matter of time before conspiracy theorists accuse Nio of faking the lap time.
