Chevrolet Enjoy MPV Scores Shocking Zero-Star Safety Rating In Crash Test

Crash test footage recently showed how the new Volvo XC60 will be one of the safest SUVs ever made, thanks to its rigid structure minimizing the risk of injury to occupants. It's part of Volvo's mission to make all of its vehicles "deathproof" by 2020. On the other end of the spectrum, we have the Chevrolet Enjoy, a low cost MPV which has the dubious honor of being awarded a zero-star safety rating by Global NCAP. In 2017, that's downright disgraceful. The eight-seat MPV was designed for the Indian market – Chevrolet even declared that the Enjoy is equipped with the "highest standards of safety." When this was put to the test by Global NCAP, the results are damning, to say the least. It probably shouldn't come as a surprise however when you consider that the entry-level trim doesn't have any airbags. During a frontal offset impact at 40 mph, the Chevrolet Enjoy was awarded a zero-star safety rating for adult occupant protection as driver front passenger injuries would have been "unacceptably high," or possibly fatal. Rear seat child occupation protection scored slightly better, with a two-star safety rating. Higher trim levels only offer two airbags. As well as the lack of airbags, the Chevrolet Enjoy's poor structure was to blame for the shocking safety rating, as the structural integrity was put into question. The accompanying crash test footage makes for grim viewing, as both the front driver and passenger slam into the steering wheel and dashboard unprotected. There is nothing to enjoy about a zero-star safety score and GM should be embarrassed that they are selling cars with such inadequate levels of occupant protection to Indian consumers," said David Ward, Secretary General of Global NCAP. Sadly, this isn't the first time an India-designed car has received a zero-star rating. Last year, the Chevrolet Beat scored zero stars for adult and child safety in Latin NCAP crash tests.
