Mar. 19, 2017 11:45 AM ET by Martin Bigg Movies & TV / 1 Comment Castrol promotes "The Fate Of The Furious" with an augmented reality challenge With less than a month until the much-anticipated release of "The Fate of the Furious," its promotional campaign is now at full throttle - and it's just as spectacular as some of the stunts in the movie. We already knew that Dodge had partnered with Universal to promote the new movie, but this latest promotional video comes from Castrol Edge. In case you needed reminding that this movie will have copious amounts of explosions, Castrol created a car action sequence with a twist – it uses augmented reality. In the short film titled 'Titanium Ice,' We see stunt driver Debbie Evans, who did some of the stunt driving in "The Fate of the Furious," get tasked by Michelle Rodriguez to take part in a unique driving challenge set in the icy landscape of the Yukon in Canada. The car of choice for the challenge is a 5.0-liter supercharged Jaguar F-Type, which is used to avoid an onslaught of virtual military tanks, nuclear submarines, helicopters, missiles, explosions and shattering ice. Despite every obstacle not being real, the challenge still gave the car a workout. "Driving in mixed reality has to be one of the toughest challenges I've ever faced. Using Castrol EDGE gives you the confidence to push yourself and your car to the extreme. It gave me the boost needed to navigate my way through the perilous course." Pushing the boundaries of mixed reality special effects, Castrol Edge worked with experts from production studio UNIT9. A bespoke headset was developed, blending computer-generated images with live action to "create one of the most intense driving experiences imaginable". Watching the video, it looks like the most fun driving video game ever. Fate of the Furious will be crashing into theatres April 15th, and will take destruction to absurd new levels judging from the action-packed trailers.
