Is This The Most Unusual Ferrari You' ve Ever Seen

If you don't recognize this Ferrari, allow us to introduce you to this one-of-a-kind machine. It's called the Ferrari Uovo, or the 166MM/212 Export 'Uovo,' to give it its full name. If you're wondering about the, shall we say, unconventional styling, the Uovo was a one-off coachbuilder project by Carrozzeria Fontana, which meshed together a vintage Ferrari 166MM and 212 Export, resulting in a unique egg-shaped, or 'Uovo,' (yes, that's the Italian word for 'egg) design. And now it's heading to RM Sotheby's auction. Rm Sotheby's Aside from its eye-catching shape commissioned by Carrozzeria Fontana and famous sculptor Franco Reggani, the 1950 Uovo has plenty of racing heritage too. Its aerodynamic bodywork and underpinning Ferrari chassis and drivetrain made it very competitive in the grueling 1951 Mille Miglia and Giro di Sicilia race events, where it held the lead before it was forced to retire – it's thought that the Uovo would have otherwise raced to victory, had it not broken down in both events. It's not exactly one of the most fetching Ferraris ever made, but it's certainly one of the most unusual, which would make it a unique addition to fanatical Ferrari collectors. The auction house isn't stating how much the Uovo is likely to be snapped up for, but considering that a 166 MM was sold for $3 million at the same event a few years back, it stands to reason that the Uovo will sell for several million when it gets shown to the public for the first time in 30 years and goes under the hammer in August.
