The 2017 VW Golf Alltrack Is World' s Better Than You' d Assume

Feb. 24, 2017 11:05 AM ET by Jay Traugott / 8 Comments Think a Golf wagon, only raised and with the Golf R's AWD system. We honestly didn't have high initial expectations for this one. Yes, we're big fans of the Volkswagen Golf lineup, including the GTI and Golf R, but we failed to see the point of the Golf Alltrack. Then we drove one for a week and changed our minds. What VW did here was so simple it's brilliant: start with the already excellent Golf Sportwagen, jack up the ride height a bit, tweak the exterior slightly, and toss in the Golf R's 4Motion AWD system. Those Germans. So clever. So innovative. Power, however, comes from the base Golf's turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder with 170 hp and 199 lb-ft of torque that comes paired to a six-speed dual-clutch. Honestly, this combo is more than good enough. Step inside and you'll find that familiar Golf interior, only VW offers just three color options and one upholstery material: leatherette. Why? Because it's easy to clean following your down and dirty off-road adventures. Speaking of which, can the Golf Alltrack really take you off-road? Kind of. It's not as able as, say, the Subaru Outback, but AWD is always better than FWD when going off pavement. In any case, the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack, base price of $26,950, is an all-around winner that's earned our respect.
