The VW Atlas Weekend Edition Wants To Be America' s Favorite Camping Car

Feb. 11, 2017 3:30 PM ET by Michael Hines / 8 Comments Volkswagen is hard at work ensuring the Atlas offers something for everyone. The Volkswagen Atlas Weekend Edition is headed to the 2017 Chicago Auto Show. Just what makes this car perfect for the weekend? Its accessories of course! Despite being called a concept it is safe to assume that all of these extra bits and bobs will make production. Whether or not they will be part of something called the "Weekend Edition" package remains to be seen. The most notable pieces of this package are the dog cage (officially called a cargo divider) and rooftop pop-up cargo box or "Urban Loader" in VW speak. Volkswagen The dog cage fits between the second row and ensures four-legged friends don't roam around during trips. When popped up the Urban Loader offers an additional 17.7 cubic feet of storage space. If you're bringing the dog along on a camping trip these two accessories go hand in hand. The Weekend Edition also includes 18-inch wheels with a custom anthracite gray finish, tablet holders mounted on the front head rests, side steps, window and hood visors, all-weather cargo mats and a heavy-duty trunk liner. The Atlas Weekend Edition being brought to Chicago is the SEL Premium model and features a 3.6-liter V6 engine making 276 horsepower. The transmission is an eight-speed auto which sends power to all four wheels via Volkswagen's 4Motion AWD. Volkswagen says many of the accessories on the Weekend Edition will be available once the Atlas goes on sale this spring. Volkswagen Volkswagen Volkswagen Volkswagen Volkswagen Volkswagen
