This Is The Fastest Autonomous Car Ever

Mar. 01, 2017 5:06 AM ET by Martin Bigg / 12 Comments Move over Tesla, there's a new player in town. When we talk about EVs breaking new records, it typically belongs to the Tesla Model S P100D breaking a new 0-60 mph speed record. With Tesla stealing the spotlight, you would be forgiven for forgetting about the NextEV NIO EP9, a Chinese electric supercar tipped to be the fastest EV in the world having blitzed the Nurburgring Nordschleife in just seven minutes and 5.12 seconds. And now it's broken another record, this time at the Austin-based Circuit of the Americas. Impressively, the EP9 posted a time of two minutes and 11.3 seconds and hit a top speed of 170 mph, setting a COTA production car lap record. Branding the EP9 is a bit of a stretch, though: only six have been made, each costing $1.3 million. And they've already been sold to NextEV investors. Still, it's an impressive showcase of an electric car's capabilities that poses a significant threat to Tesla. Arguably more impressive is the time set when the EP9 performed a fully autonomous lap, completing the circuit in two minutes and 40.33 seconds, despite being slower than the lap with a driver behind the wheel. Yes, you guessed it: that makes it currently the fastest autonomous car in the world. Then again, no other autonomous cars have been timed at COTA, so there aren't any other EVs it can be compared to. It's no wonder the EP9 was able to set such blistering lap times when you look at the specs. Four electric motors combine to produce 1,341 horsepower, a top speed of 194 mph and a 0-124 mph acceleration time of 7.1 seconds. It will also hit 0-60 mph in 2.7 seconds, which can't quite match the Tesla Model S. Around a track, however, the NextEV NIO EP9 can officially declare itself as the fastest electric car in the world. Your move, Tesla.
