Porsche Confirms 680 HP Cayenne Will Debut Using Panamera Drivetrain

Volkswagen's current self-imposed financial constraints are causing each of the automaker's subsidiary companies to share platforms and technologies with one another, which is perfectly fine with us given how well it tends to build its engines and chassis. Most recently it decided to share the electric portion of the Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid's drivetrain with the Panamera Turbo S to make a 680 horsepower monster. Now, as Australia's Motoring claims, the Cayenne may be the latest beneficiary of this drivetrain. Porsche Speaking with Porsche's global head Oliver Blume at the Geneva Motor Show, Motoring learned that Porsche is planning the massive boost in horsepower (the current Cayenne Turbo S makes 520 horsepower while the E-Hybrid makes 416 horsepower) right as the performance luxury SUV segment is poised to blossom with picks like the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio (which stole Porsche's Nurburgring record for fastest SUV) and the luxurious Audi SQ8 coming to market. However, thanks to hybrid power, the Porsche will remain competitive by retaining the better fuel economy to help it appeal to wealthy environmentalists while delivering instant electric torque for epic acceleration. By making the model lineup's flagship example a hybrid, the automaker also hopes to help ease customers and fans into a future of electrified Porsches. "That's kind of our idea, to promote the electric power and therefore make the top-of-the-line model a hybrid version, like the Turbo S," said Blume. Like the Panamera, the Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid would make 680 horsepower and 626 lb-ft of torque while managing an all-electric range of about 31 miles. Interestingly enough, Motoring expects the Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid to cost less than the Panamera version endowed with the same drivetrain, which is a bit of a head-scratcher to us but is not an issue we'd complain about. Unfortunately, Blume did not make it clear whether other Porsche models would get the same powerful hybrid drivetrain, so for now we'll have to shelve our hopes for a 680 horsepower Macan or 911 until Porsche is really desperate for better fuel economy.
