Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Confiscated In 2011 Remains Left For Dead

Feb. 17, 2017 10:01 AM ET by Jay Traugott Supercars / 13 Comments OK, this one hurts. Every now and then we hear about some exotic car literally being dumped and left for nature to do its thing. This happens for many reasons, but mainly because the owner is about to face the law over financial irregularities. A simple way to put it, we know, but do their expensive cars also have to suffer? GT Spirit found these photos on a Czech Facebook page, Magazin ProDriver CZ, of an abandoned Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. It's been parked in a field since 2011 and hasn't moved since. Supposedly, it was confiscated by local police following "a complex theft enquiry involving a leasing company." The car has since been, more or less, forgotten. So is it really abandoned? Kind of. The problem is that it can't be sold until police have completed their enquiry. Six years sounds like plenty of time to have done so, but who are we to judge an investigation we honestly know little to nothing about. Still, it hurts to see something as rare and special as a Mercedes SLR McLaren literally just rotting away in an impound lot. Built from 2003 to 2010, the Mercedes SLR McLaren was a joint effort between the two automakers, with production taking place in Woking, UK. This was the era when Mercedes owned 40 percent of McLaren, but that collaboration is long over. Power comes from a hand-built 5.4-liter supercharged V8 with 617 hp and 580 lb-ft of torque. In the case of this car, who knows if the engine will even fire up all things considered. Damn shame.
