The Ferrari SP38 Is Even More Stunning In The Flesh

Perhaps the only real surprise last week was the online reveal of the one-off Ferrari SP38. Based on the 488 GTB, the SP38 incorporates that car's running gear and chassis, but its bodywork is all-new. And what a stunning design it is, thanks to the talented Ferrari Design Center. The styling is pure Ferrari and pays tribute to one of the firm's greatest road cars ever, the F40. How so? Just look where the rear glass normally is in the 488 GTB. The SP38's glass has been removed in favor of a carbon fiber cover directly inspired by the F40's engine cover. Even the rear spoiler, while not as dramatic as the one found on the 80s icon, bears resemblance. Up front are new and narrower headlights for a more aggressive look. Also note that the side air scoop is nearly hidden. The SP38 was commissioned by one of Ferrari's best customers and was on display yesterday at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este. YouTuber Automotive Mike just so happened to be on hand to film it in the flesh. And yes, there's some exhaust note for your audio pleasure. Unfortunately, the twin-turbo, twin-intercooled 3.9-liter V8 isn't revved. We also catch a glimpse of the interior for the first time, which doesn't appear to differ much from the 488's cockpit. There's also something new shown on the car that wasn't there in the original photos: the name Deborah. The rear license plate reads 'SP38 Deborah.' Who's Deborah? No clue, honestly. We've reached out to Ferrari for comment and we'll update this space if an answer arrives.
