The First Subaru Plug-In Hybrid Won' t Be The Next WRX

May. 14, 2018 5:58 PM ET by Jay Traugott / 4 Comments But rather a far more conventional choice. Compared to most other mainstream automakers, Subaru is lagging behind in the electrified powertrain department. To date, its sole hybrid remains the previous generation Crosstrek, which unfortunately did not offer a substantial fuel economy improvement over its gasoline-engined sibling. But Subaru is taking another crack at this whole hybrid thing, as it has just announced its first-ever plug-in hybrid, the 2019 Crosstrek Hybrid. Subaru The automaker claims the new crossover will maintain all of the on and off-road capabilities as the one currently on sale (and pictured here), though with increased fuel efficiency. Those new fuel economy numbers, however, have yet to be made available. The 2018 Subaru Crosstrek, powered by a 2.0-liter Boxer four and paired to the CVT, returns an already impressive 27/33/29 mpg city/highway/combined. The standard six-speed manual lowers those figures to 23/29/25 mpg. The Crosstrek is currently Subaru's best-selling model, so it makes sense for the company to give it the plug-in hybrid treatment before the rest of the lineup. Subaru Subaru says the new Crosstrek PHEV will utilize Toyota's proven Hybrid System (THS), combined with the same Boxer engine. Power, like always, will go to all four wheels through an all-new (and not yet specified) transmission. The Crosstrek PHEV can be driven as a normal hybrid with both gas and electric power, thus no range anxiety, or as a pure electric for shorter commutes. Subaru also says the vehicle will have unique styling compared to the standard version. No pictures have been revealed as of this writing. An official reveal date hasn't been announced either, but we predict that will happen sometime later this summer or early fall. Subaru Subaru Subaru
