There' s Bad News About The 286-hp Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR

The evergreen GTI is currently one of the best all-rounders out there, and many exciting special edition models have just arrived. Each year at a VW fan gathering by Lake Worthersee in Austria, it has become tradition for Volkswagen to reveal an exciting concept car. Most are merely crazy designs that will never see the light of day, but this year VW decided to show off the near-production ready GTI TCR, an homage to the successful racing Golf TCR. volkswagen The good news is that with 286 hp, it will be the most powerful front-wheel-drive production Golf on sale. The bad news is, it is not coming to the U.S. The same fate has regularly befallen previous limited-edition Golfs, but this one will be a little bit easier to accept because we already have the high performance Golf R. It comes equipped with the same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that is currently doing duty in all fast Golfs, but it makes 292 hp and should easily out-accelerate the TCR away from the lights thanks to all-wheel-drive. The Golf R may even receive a power boost and weight reduction in the next generation, which will help ease our pain of not receiving the TCR. The Golf TCR is rumored to come fitted with a limited-slip diff, which should quell the wheel spin, and it will come with the quick-shifting 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and a unique body kit. The Worthersee GTI festival is taking place on May 9, allowing VW fans to see what the TCR will look like in the metal when it goes into production towards the end of the year. Rumors indicate it will be an even more track-focused than the GTI Clubsport S. It should also be able to reach 164 mph with its 155-mph limiter removed. For now though, fans of fast FWD Golf models will have to be content with the 220-hp GTI, or simply get the Golf R. Volkswagen Volkswagen
