New Mercedes GLE Crossover Caught With Barely Any Camouflage

We've already seen spy shots of a prototype Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 being put through its paces, and now our spies have caught two prototypes of the standard model roaming city streets. And unlike the AMG model we saw a couple of months ago, the heavy camouflage has been mostly stripped away, revealing the next-generation GLE's new styling. Since both prototypes are finished in the same color, you'd be forgiven for thinking they are the same model. However, a closer inspection reveals we're looking at two different trims. The first prototype appears to be an entry-level Avantgarde, while the second has been fitted with an AMG Line styling package, which can be distinguished by its grille. The AMG package has a single bar in the grille, while the Avantgarde package has twin bars. The AMG Line model also looks sportier, with a lower stance and larger air intakes. Based on these spy shots, the new GLE looks a lot sleeker than the outgoing model and has benefited from Mercedes' 'Sensual Purity' design philosophy applied to its new models with less visible creases. Unsurprisingly, the overall shape of the GLE looks like a larger version of the GLC. Our spies also managed to snap some shots of the partially covered interior. Compared to the CLS, the round air outlets in the dashboard have been replaced with square ones. There's also a floating center console design, and the steering wheel has been lifted from the new G-Class. As for powertrains, we expect the new GLE will use engines from the E-Class range, which currently includes a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6. A flagship AMG GLE 63 version will also join the lineup packing a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8, while hybrid variants are expected to follow in the future. The new Mercedes GLE looks practically production-ready, so it could make its public debut as early as the Paris Motor Show in October.
