Meet The Maybach Vision Ultimate Luxury Concept SUV

Following last week's leak, the Mercedes-Maybach Vision Ultimate Luxury concept has been revealed ahead of its world debut at the Beijing Auto Show. Just as we saw in the leaked photos, the concept's design is a bizarre blend of a sedan and an SUV that "combines the comfort and typical strengths of both body styles," with a raised seating position and athletic looks. The concept is designed specifically for the Chinese market where SUVs and sedans represent the two most popular segments for luxury vehicles. Mercedes-Benz The resulting shape is polarizing, to put it mildly – it's certainly striking, but it's no stunner. A gargantuan chrome grille dominates the front, while muscular fenders and huge intakes give the concept a sporty look. If the grille looks familiar, that's because the design first debuted on the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6. The proportions look particularly odd at the profile – it essentially has the body of an SUV and the notchback rear of a sedan. As a result, it just looks like a high-riding luxury sedan. In another peculiar design decision, the concept features a split running down the full length of the roof, which splits the sunroof into two separate pieces. We don't know what they were thinking either. Still, it's safe to say the Mercedes-Maybach Vision Ultimate Luxury looks like nothing else before it. "The Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury is a totally new archetype of a kind never seen before," says Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer at Daimler AG. Our concept combines the DNA of an SUV with that of a saloon to produce an ultra-modern SUV of three-box design," he added. "With sensuality and pure sophistication, we have created a timeless vehicle that underscores the position of Mercedes-Maybach as the ultimate luxury brand." In terms of power, the Vision Ultimate Luxury features an electric, all-wheel-drive powertrain. Four electric motors combine to produce a total of 738 horsepower, while the 80-kWh battery allows for an estimated range of over 200 miles. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. Using a fast-charging system, enough power can be charged to achieve a range of 60 miles in just five minutes. Being a Maybach, the interior is as insanely opulent as you would expect. Passengers can relax in the back and bask in fully adjustable seats with diamond-stitched Nappa leather while their chauffeur takes care of driving duties. A wide center console extends through to the rear. It's even equipped with a heated tray with teapot and cups, allowing "exquisite tea-drinking enjoyment while on the road." Mercedes-Benz The driver also gets a pair of 12.3-inch screens displaying the instruments and infotainment. Maybach is expected to roll out a luxury SUV based on the next-generation GLS to rival the Bentley Bentayga and Rolls-Royce Cullinan, but we doubt it will take its design cues from this strange SUV-sedan EV, somehow.
