Volkswagen I D R Electric Racer Will Break Cover This Week

Apr. 21, 2018 8:00 AM ET by Martin Bigg / Comments Volkswagen is aiming to break a new Pikes Peak record with its new electric racer in June. Volkswagen is aiming to become the world's leading electric carmaker with its upcoming I.D. range, spanning everything from hatchbacks and crossovers, to a re-imagining of the Microbus. VW's electric I.D. range won't just be restricted to the road, either. The German automaker recently announced the I.D. R-a prototype electric racer that could potentially set a new record at Pikes Peak for EVs. We've only seen render images of the electric racer so far, but Volkswagen will finally reveal the prototype to the public this week. The reveal event for Volkswagen's first ever electric racer will be livestreamed on Sunday, April 22, at a racetrack in Alés, France, the hometown of world-class driver Romain Duma, who will attempt to set the hill-climb record in the I.D. R at Pikes Peak in June. The official test program will commence next week on the day after the I.D. R's official reveal. Ahead of its public debut, Volkswagen has released a new revealing render of the I.D. R, showing off the electric racer's front-end for the first time. It looks suitably aggressive, sporting a massive splitter in the front bumper, an illuminated VW logo, and a distinctive LED strip. No technical details have been revealed yet, but Volkswagen says the I.D. R has been designed specifically to tackle the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. The car is extremely light thanks to its aerodynamically optimized body, and it's powered by "a powerful electric power unit" with all-wheel drive. Volkswagen last attempted the Pikes Peak Hill Climb back in 1987 with a unique twin-engine Golf, but was forced to retire just two corners before the finish line. Over 30 years later, Volkswagen is finally coming back to settle the score and hopefully set a new record for electric cars.
