New Video Shows The 5 000-HP Devel Sixteen May Actually Exist

Apr. 19, 2018 6:00 AM ET by Martin Bigg / 24 Comments The driver was only using 20 percent of the throttle in the test run. At this point, the 3,000-hp Devel Sixteen currently in development in Dubai feels like a myth. A prototype of the insanely powerful hypercar was unveiled at the Dubai Motor Show four years ago, but many were skeptical about the company's claims it will pack a 12.6-liter, quad-turbo V16 engine enabling a top speed of over 300 mph. A prototype that looked more production-ready was then shown at last year's Dubai Motor Show, but we've yet to see a working prototype in motion – until now, it seems. Devel has posted a new video showing a prototype of the Sixteen thundering down a desert road. The video is short but sweet, lasting a grand total of seven seconds, but it's certainly whetted our appetite. This isn't showing off the car's full potential, however: the engine was apparently on low boost and the driver was using just 20 percent of the throttle during the test run. Still, at least it shows the Sixteen moving under its own power, so development of the hypercar is hopefully coming along. If it does ever make it to production, the base V8 model will cost $1.6 million and pack 1,500 horsepower, putting it on par with the Bugatti Chiron. There will also be a 3,000-hp variant with two V8s LS V8s for $1.8 million and a 5,000-hp variant costing $2 million. The latter won't be road legal, as it will essentially be a dragster. The company is targeting a top speed of 320 mph for the 3,000-hp V16 model but finding tires that can cope with that level of power is another matter entirely. If you're still not convinced the Devel Sixteen will make it into production, the company's chief engineer is Paolo Garella who is an ex-Pininfarina employee and the head of Manifattura Automobili Torino, which is currently developing the New Stratos. Last November, Garella promised we'll see a working prototype of the Devel Sixteen in the next 12-14 months. At this rate, he may well deliver on that promise.
