Ford Wants A Mustang To Win The Daytona 500

Along with becoming the best selling sports coupe for the third year running, Ford also took the opportunity to make a pair of motorsports announcements that should prove to be popular with fans globally. First, the Mustang is joining the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series in 2019, meaning for the first time in the car's long and storied history it will be eligible to win the Daytona 500. Second, the car will join the ever popular and always thrilling Australian Supercars Championship! "We're combining America's favorite sports car with America's top stock car racing series," said Mark Rushbrook, global director, Ford Performance Motorsports. "Mustang always has been about affordable performance, which can be traced to innovations we've made competing in racing, like NASCAR. Mustang is a perfect fit for our racing heritage today and tomorrow." Ford has raced the Mustang in the NASCAR Xfinity Series since 2011, pictured here, winning championships in all but one season. This will be Ford's fourth different Cup model in NASCAR's modern era following the Thunderbird, Taurus, and Fusion. "This announcement makes me very happy," said Edsel B. Ford II, a member of Ford Motor Company's board of directors. Ford "Mustang is a car that is woven into the fabric of our country, and it's only right that we put it on the track in NASCAR's most visible series. I can't wait." The car is still going through validation. Testing will be formally submitted to NASCAR for approval this summer, that's when we'll get a peek at it for the first time. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, Ford announced the Mustang will make its Australian track debut at the first round of the Supercars Series at the Adelaide 500 next March. It's actually a fairly significant announcement, in order to accommodate the Mustang the Supercars Series decided to allow entry of a two-door coupe for the first time since the series was born in 1997. Ford Australia and Ford Performance will work with DJR Team Penske and Tickford Racing to bring the new car up to a competitive level. Look for both new race cars to poke their heads out of development at some point later this year.
