Is The End Near For The V12-Powered Mercedes-AMG SL65

Convertibles are hard for automakers to sell for a variety of reasons, and the Mercedes-AMG SL 65 is an even more difficult sales pitch. With a base price of $222,000, just about anything that's not a Ferrari or Lamborghini can be a hard sell, and Mercedes-AMG is fully aware of this. According to the German language MBPassion blog, the SL 65 could be discontinued as soon as this June. An inside source revealed the news, and Mercedes-AMG has, so far, neither confirmed nor denied it. Considering its price tag, we can't imagine this big coupe being a hot seller, but there's other things to consider as well. For starters, there are other less expensive SL variants to choose from, including the also highly respected SL 63, which just so happens to have a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 with 577 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. By comparison, the SL 65's twin-turbo V12 offers up 621 hp and 738 lb-ft. Not a dramatic power difference, but there's still that additional street cred that goes with having a V12. The SL 450, the cheapest variant, begins at $88,200 and is powered by a twin-turbo V6 with 362 hp. And then there's AMG GT coupe and roadster. Mercedes-Benz Though it's a completely separate model, the AMG GT is far prettier than the somewhat awkward looking SL. It also boasts plenty of power thanks to a twin-turbo engine of its own: a 4.0-liter V8 with up to 550 hp and 502 lb-ft. Considering everything, it's impressive the V12-powered SL 65 has managed to survive this long. But we're still getting ahead of ourselves.
