What Is This Silent Ferrari Prototype Testing At Fiorano

Apr. 03, 2018 7:00 AM ET by Jared Rosenholtz / 6 Comments Could it be a hybrid or even an EV? The Hypercar Holy Trinity proved that electric motors aren't just an way to make cars more fuel efficient. They can be also be used to make cars faster - much faster. Ferrari's own LaFerrari used a 6.3-liter V12 mated to a hybrid KERS system to produce 949 hp. We've heard Ferrari say it wants to convert all of its models to some form of electrification by 2019, but the company hasn't made anything official. Even though Ferrari hasn't revealed any new electrified models, the company has clearly been testing the technology. A while ago, we spotted a mystery Ferrari model with what appeared to be a hybrid KERS system. We thought it could be a new track model, but Ferrari recently showed off the 488 Pista with a non-hybrid V8 producing 720 horsepower. Now the mystery model has been spotted again at Ferrari's Fiorano test track. Judging by the way the car silently pulled away, it likely has some form of hybridization. When Ferrari releases a hardcore version of one of its models - in this case the 488 Pista - it usually signals the end of a production model. Perhaps the 488 will soon be replaced by a new model with a hybrid drivetrain. Nothing will be official until Ferrari makes an announcement (likely next year), but we wouldn't be surprised if the next mid-engined Ferrari model ends up being faster than the Pista thanks to hybrid tech.
