Brabham Launching New BT62 Supercar Next Month

Apr. 14, 2018 8:00 AM ET by Mark Stevenson Supercars / 1 Comment Son of Sir Jack Brabham is reviving the name for a Le Mans-style, road-legal supercar-and possibly a Formula 1 team. Legendary race-car constructor Brabham is making a comeback, and it won't be limiting itself to the world's race tracks this time around. On May 2, the recently revived Brabham Automotive will reveal a new, Le Mans-style, road-legal supercar that Britain's Autocar believes will be powered by a racing-derived V8. The public will also get a chance to see the car in person on May 5 and 6 at a yet-undisclosed location in London. The Brabham website currently hosts a countdown to the event. Last month, Brabham Automotive posted two teaser videos to its newly minted YouTube channel. One of them includes a soundtrack of the supposed V8 engine at idle and low revs. The other-shown below-features the Brabham BT62 doing a screaming pitwall fly-by, its silhouette just a blur. Still, one can make out an aggressive rear wing from the footage. Founded by three-time Formula 1 World Champion Sir Jack Brabham and British-Australian engineer Ron Tauranac, Brabham has been home to some of motorsport's most influential people. Bernie Ecclestone owned the team from 1972 to 1987. Gordon Murray, one of Formula One's most influential designers, developed the iconic "fan car" while he worked at Brabham. It was also home to Ron Dennis (now at McLaren), Charlie Whiting (Formula One Race Director), along with a roster of legendary racers that includes Dan Gurney, Jacky Ickx, Graham and Damon Hill, Niki Lauda, Nelson Piquet, and current Formula One commentator Martin Brundle. The company is now owned and run by David Brabham, Sir Jack Brabham's son. The rumor mill states this is just the first step in a Brabham resurgence. After the launch of the Brabham BT62 road car, many expect Brabham Automotive to purchase the Force India Formula One team as a way to get itself back into racing. Speaking with Autocar, a Brabham spokesman stated the company is "continually approached on various projects" and it "will reveal more about the [automotive] project and its intentions shortly."
