Aston Martin' s First SUV Now Set To Be Powered By Gas Only

When Aston Martin first showed off its DBX SUV, the plan was to make it a fully electric model. Plans often change in the automotive industry, and the DBX won't even keep its original name. Aston Martin's first SUV will likely be called the Varekai and it won't end up being an EV, either. Contrary to earlier rumors, Automotive News reports Aston Martin's first SUV will have a gasoline engine only. This will make the Aston SUV a closer rival to models like the Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, and upcoming Ferrari and Rolls-Royce SUVs. Aston Martin Unlike the original concept, the Varekai will be a five-door SUV rather than a sleek three door. Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer said there are no plans for a fully-electric production DBX, nor are there any plans for a diesel or plug-in model. The Bentayga offers a diesel engine, but Palmer said, "My belief for a long time is that diesel's life is limited. Ultimately it's dead." When asked about a plug-in model, Palmer said, "You've got the [extra] weight and cost of two technologies. It's probably a convenient stepping stone but it's not one we need." Purists can now rejoice, because Aston Martin's SUV will be powered by good-old gasoline alone. The two likely engines are the twin-turbo V12 from the DB11 and the twin-turbo V8 from Mercedes-AMG. Aston's SUV will be built in St Athan, Wales, on a platform adapted from the DB11 and Vantage.
